A South Bay Institution That Feels Like Home
The Original Red Onion is the longtime Rolling Hills Estates restaurant that has spent decades serving giant plates of Sonoran-style Mexican food, famously strong margaritas, and the kind of nostalgic atmosphere you can’t really manufacture anymore. Since opening in 1963, the restaurant has become a true Palos Verdes landmark, supported by generations of loyal regulars.
Walk inside, and it immediately feels different from newer South Bay spots. The walls are packed with old photographs, memorabilia, antiques, and years of history layered into every corner. It’s cozy, a little chaotic, deeply familiar, and exactly why people keep coming back.

Jerry’s Famous Margaritas Are a Local Favorite
If you ask longtime customers what keeps them loyal to Red Onion, there’s a very good chance the answer starts with margaritas.
And more specifically: Jerry’s margaritas.
Jerry has worked at Red Onion for an incredible 50 years, becoming as much a part of the restaurant’s identity as the red booths and vintage décor. Over the decades, he’s become known across the South Bay for crafting some of the restaurant’s most beloved drinks, especially the famously smooth, dangerously easy-to-drink margaritas that seem to show up at nearly every table.

The restaurant’s margarita lineup ranges from classic house blends to Cadillac versions made with Grand Marnier, plus spicy mezcal and fruit-forward variations.
And according to local lore, Red Onion may have even helped popularize the blended margarita itself back in the 1960s.
Honestly, after one sip, it’s not hard to understand why people still order pitchers.

The Food: Comforting, Old-School, and Generously Portioned
While the margaritas get plenty of attention, the food is what turns first-time visitors into regulars.
The menu leans heavily into Sonoran-style Mexican comfort food rooted in family recipes passed down through generations of the Earle family.

Signature favorites include:
- Carne Ortega
- Chicken Mole
- Carnitas Pork plates
- Crispy tacos and enchiladas
- Giant burritos and combination platters
There’s also a surprisingly broad menu of American classics, seafood dishes, steaks, salads, and sandwiches, which makes the restaurant work equally well for big family dinners and casual weeknight meals.

A Restaurant Built on History
Part of what makes Red Onion special is that it genuinely feels connected to Southern California history.
The restaurant’s roots trace back to Catalina Castillo, whose recipes inspired the family’s original diner operation in Arizona in the early 1900s before eventually evolving into the first Red Onion in Inglewood in 1949.
At one point, there were multiple Red Onion locations across Southern California, but today the Palos Verdes location is the last one standing.

The Atmosphere Is Half the Experience
Red Onion isn’t polished in the modern minimalist sense, and that’s the point.
It feels lively, nostalgic, and comfortably lived-in. Families celebrate birthdays here. Friends linger over margaritas. Locals run into each other unexpectedly.
There’s a warmth to the restaurant that newer concepts often struggle to replicate because this place wasn’t designed around aesthetics or trends; it evolved naturally over decades.
And in the South Bay, that kind of authenticity stands out more than ever.

In a region constantly chasing the newest restaurant opening, The Original Red Onion remains proof that longevity still means something.
It delivers old-school Mexican comfort food, legendary margaritas, deeply rooted family history, and the kind of atmosphere that instantly feels familiar, even on your first visit.
