Set Sail in Redondo Beach: King Harbor Youth Sailing Program

When most people think about King Harbor, they picture waterfront dining, paddleboarding, or watching the sunset from the pier. But tucked inside the marina is one of the South Bay’s most rewarding experiences for kids: the King Harbor Youth Foundation’s year-round sailing program.

More Than Sailing Lessons

The Learn to Sail program welcomes beginners between the ages of 7 and 12, with instruction both in the classroom and on the water. Young sailors learn aboard Optimist (“Opti”) dinghies, the same boats used around the world to introduce children to sailing. Returning sailors can continue improving their skills through after-school sailing, while more experienced students have opportunities to move into racing programs and even high school sailing teams.

That means a child can begin as a first-time sailor and continue growing through competitive sailing opportunities without ever leaving the program.

Many graduates of the King Harbor Youth Foundation have gone on to sail in college, coach younger students, and compete internationally.
