If you’re always looking for an excuse to add another food stop to your South Bay rotation, here’s a good one: Kinkan Market has arrived in Hermosa Beach.

The new concept from Chef Nan Yimcharoen, the chef behind the acclaimed Kinkan, brings her signature Japanese-focused cooking into a more casual, takeout-friendly format. Kinkan Market is centered around made-to-order bento, chirashi, premium seafood, and a curated selection of Japanese pantry and lifestyle goods.

Kinkan Market Comes to Hermosa Beach

Kinkan Market officially opened on August 1 and is currently accepting pre-orders for pickup from Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The concept is designed around food prepared fresh for your selected pickup time.

The Hermosa Beach market is the latest chapter for Chef Nan, whose original Kinkan became known for its inventive Thai-Japanese cuisine and kaiseki-style dining. Before opening that restaurant, Yimcharoen gained a following during the pandemic for her handcrafted bento boxes, which became something of an underground favorite among LA food lovers.

Now, she’s bringing that bento-focused approach back in Hermosa Beach.

What to Order at Kinkan Market

The menu currently keeps things focused, with two standout options: Kinkan Bara Chirashi and Kani Meshi.

The Kinkan Bara Chirashi features premium Japanese seafood over sushi rice seasoned with aged rice vinegar. The bowl includes ingredients such as dry-aged Pacific bluefin tuna, Japanese yellowtail, Japanese black snapper, tamagoyaki, cucumber, pickled vegetables, furikake, and fresh wasabi, with ingredients changing based on seasonal availability.

For something a little more crab-forward, the Kani Meshi centers around Hokkaido snow crab, with salmon roe, tamagoyaki, and cucumber over sushi rice.

Both bowls can also be customized with premium add-ons, including options like Hokkaido uni, ikura, scallops, sweet shrimp, and additional bluefin tuna.

More Than Just Bento

While the food is the main draw, Kinkan Market is also part specialty shop, part Japanese pantry.

The online market includes categories for beverages, pantry items, tea, snacks, cookbooks, kitchen goods, and gifts. Current offerings range from Japanese citrus products and miso soup to kitchen tools and other carefully selected Japanese goods.

It’s a nice extension of the concept: grab a beautifully made bento for lunch, then leave with something for your own kitchen.

A New Way to Experience Kinkan

For anyone familiar with Chef Nan’s original Kinkan, the Hermosa Beach market offers a much more casual way to experience her food.

Rather than a sit-down tasting menu, Kinkan Market is all about taking that same attention to ingredients and Japanese craftsmanship and putting it into something you can pick up and enjoy wherever you’re headed next. The concept was inspired in part by Japanese fish markets and everyday food culture, with an emphasis on making high-quality Japanese takeaway feel like an everyday option.

And for the South Bay, that’s a pretty welcome addition!
