Every spring and summer, something magical happens along the Southern California coastline and it is one of the most unique natural events you can witness in the South Bay.
The Grunion Run is Back
If you have never seen a grunion run, imagine this. Under the cover of night, hundreds of silvery fish ride the waves onto the sand, wriggling onto shore in a synchronized ritual that feels almost otherworldly. This is the annual spawning event of the California grunion and it is absolutely worth experiencing at least once.
What to Expect
This guided program starts with an engaging indoor presentation where you will learn all about the fascinating biology and mating habits of these curious fish. From how they time their runs with the tides to their rare ability to spawn on land, it is a crash course in one of California’s most interesting marine species.
After the talk, you will head out to the beach with a guide for a live observation. This is where the real magic happens. Watching the grunion come ashore under the moonlight is something you will not forget.
